An idea of James E. Foster in 1981 became a reality with the formation of the Arena Football League (AFL) in 1987. Starting with four teams, the Chicago Bruisers, Pittsburgh Gladiators, Denver Dynamite and Washington Commandos, the league began play on June 19, 1987. The Arena Football League (AFL) has gone through many franchise changes and curently the National Football League has a minority interest. The A2FL (Arena2 Football League) was started in 2000 and serves as a minor league system for the Arena Football League (AFL). The playoff system ends with the Arena Bowl game to determine the overall league champion.
