BlueStar was incorporated in Illinois in 2002, serving commercial and industrial customers throughout the state. By 2006, BlueStar began serving customers outside of Illinois and providing energy efficiency services such as energy audits, lighting retrofits and lighting maintenance. In 2007, BlueStar became a certified Green-e® Energy Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) marketer and also began offering carbon offsets to further enhance the company’s energy efficiency solutions. In 2008, BlueStar became the first retail electricity supplier in the state of Illinois to serve residential customers. BlueStar Energy sells electricity to businesses (and a few residential customers) in Illinois, Maryland and Washington, D.C. The company grew by helping customers understand how their usage patterns vary and which products may help save energy costs. "Our IT systems provide a little more meaningful information than just simply an electric bill," co-founder and CEO Guy Morgan says. When electricity prices plummeted last summer, BlueStar encouraged many of its business customers to opt for billing agreements that reflected the wholesale market rates for power. When prices dropped further, BlueStar locked customers into longer-term, lower-priced contracts. The ability to take advantage of real-time market prices isn't an option for big utility customers, Mr. Morgan says. "That's why so many customers switch."
